The local area guide to living in Leyland

Leyland is a medium sized town in the South Ribble district of Lancashire, North West England. It is in the south of the county, around 6 miles away from the city of Preston.

The name comes from old Anglo-Saxon for ‘untilled land’ and that’s exactly what the area was for many years. It was made up of rolling fields, intercut with Roman roads, and was not settled properly until after the Norman conquest of England. It was swiftly used for agriculture and the area still has some relics of that time, including St Andrew’s parish Church, which was built at the turn of the 13th century.

Leyland did not see truly significant growth, however, until the 20th and 21st centuries, when industry and farming expanded the local economy. Leyland Motors, a bus and truck manufacturer, began employing large numbers of people in the 1950s and 1960s. It grew to take over other companies - including Rover and BMC - and eventually became the British Leyland company.

As well as this, several utility and maintenance companies economically support the area. Economic Regeneration is also working with local businesses to grow the prospects of the town.

Leyland has a population of around 35,600 according to the 2011 census. The wider district, thanks to the number of thriving businesses operating there, is relatively economically prosperous. Just 2% of people claim Jobseeker’s Allowance, which compares to 2.8% for Lancashire and 3.3% for England as a whole.

Education rates are also a little above the average for the county, with 26.4% of people having achieved Level 4 qualifications or more, which compares to 25% for Lancashire.

In terms of social grade, the South Ribble district is more prosperous than many other northern areas. Judged by the occupation of the main earner, 22.6% of households belong to grade AB and 33.2% belong to C1. By comparison, the rates for Lancashire as a whole are 20.2% and 30.1% respectively.

Home ownership is also fairly high. Nearly 80% of people either own their home outright or with a mortgage, which compares with 71% for Lancashire and 63% for England. Only 8.3% of households are privately rented and around 10% are designated as social housing.

Demographically, the mean age in the district is 40.8, very slightly above the national and county averages, and the median age is 42. Around 18% of people are of pensionable age and 17% are children under the age of 16.

Nearby schools

There are a handful of state secondary schools in Leyland. These are Leyland St Mary’s Catholic High School, Academy@Worden which is slightly smaller, Balshaw’s CE High School and Wellfield High School in the centre of the town. Balshaw’s Church of England High School is the largest with more than 900 pupils. It was established in 1931 and has received an ‘Outstanding’ rating by Ofsted.

Past the age of 16, most pupils go on to Runshaw College. It has around 8,000 students across 2 campuses and has been rated very highly when under inspection.

Getting around

Leyland is served by its own railway station on the West Coast Main Line. When the railway station was put in place, in 1838, the entire civic centre of the town had to be moved temporarily to accommodate it. It offers links to Preston in 5 minutes, Lancaster in 30 minutes, and Glasgow in 3 hours. Bus services in the town are run by Stagecoach Merseyside and South Lancashire.

For motorists, Leyland sits right beside several motorways including the M6, M55, M65, and M61 and, as such, it is easy to reach other towns in the county by car.

Local shops

Leyland has a range of small independent retailers and some excellent markets, including the Leyland Market, which is open every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday.

As well as this there are some well-known high street retailers trading in the centre of the town. However, the keen shopper will find a quick trip to Preston will yield a lot more in this respect.
