The local area guide to living in Chelsea Brompton

The Chelsea-Brompton area is the southern part of Brompton that lies within the district of Chelsea. This affluent area of South West London in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is home to some of the wealthiest people in the UK. It is also one of the most expensive places to live due to its desirability as a beautiful, charming neighbourhood. This plush area among SW3 is full of quaint cafes and eateries, high end boutiques, unique shops and bespoke fitness centres.

Chelsea-Brompton has been home to some very well-known names and faces, including literary great Oscar Wilde, acting great Laurence Olivier and, more recently, actor Hugh Grant. Here, you’ll find Chelsea Football Club, Brompton Cemetery, the trendy boutiques and bars of Sloane Square and the Saatchi Gallery.

Information about the local residents

The population of the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is around 158,000, and though it is one of the most densely populated places in the country, the Brompton area is slightly less densely populated than the rest of the borough. It attracts particularly affluent and well-educated residents, and its residents are among the UK’s highest earners.

Almost three quarters of the population of this area identify as a white ethnicity. Around half of these are white British, and the other half are mostly white Europeans and North Americans.

The unemployment rate in this area is extremely low, at less than 2%, which is remarkable compared to the current national average of 7.7%.

Nearby schools

Chelsea-Brompton’s local education authority is Kensington and Chelsea, which was the second best performing authority in England and Wales for GCSE results in 2012. A remarkable 73.1% of GCSE students achieved at least 5 grades between A* to C, well above the national average of 58.2%.

The third best performing state funded school is here: St. Thomas More Language College, at which 70% of students hit the benchmark of 5 or more good GCSE grades. Christ Church C of E is another particularly high performing state-funded school, where 93% of students are attaining at least level 4 in reading, writing and mathematics at Key Stage 2.

There are a number of options for independent schools in the borough, including Cameron House School, a very well performing primary school. Further education options are available at Kensington and Chelsea College, and London’s many excellent universities are of course within easy reach.

Getting around

The closest tube stations for residents of this area are Slone Square, West Brompton and Fulham Broadway. West Brompton station lies west of Brompton Cemetery, close to Earl’s Court on the District Line. Fulham Broadway is also on the District Line and is close to Chelsea FC’s ground. While both of these are in Zone 2, Sloane Square lies to the east of the area and provides excellent central London access in Zone 1 via the Circle and District Lines.

Chelsea and Brompton are extremely well connected by bus services that run a regular, efficient service throughout the area.

All major national rail stations in London are easily accessible, and this is a convenient place to live for jetsetters, as the smaller London City Airport is just 11 miles away and the major international airports of Heathrow and Gatwick are 16 and 21 miles away respectively.

Local shops

One of the key shopping areas in this part of London is King’s Road, a long street lined with high street brands, designer boutiques, small art galleries and interior décor shops. Similarly, Sloane Street has an excellent selection of retailers as well.

The famed shopping district of Knightsbridge is of course within easy reach, featuring the world-famous Harrods and other high end department stores and boutiques. Head here if you need some serious ‘investment’ retail therapy, and you’ll be among the affluent residents who are no strangers to indulgent shopping sprees.

For film entertainment, Curzon Cinemas and Cineworld Cinema are in the area. A number of plush clubs, high end bars, trendy cafes and indulgent restaurants are also in the area for your dining and drinking pleasure.
