The local area guide to living in Sheffield
Sheffield is a city located in South Yorkshire, and has a longstanding history with industrialism and steelworks. In the Industrial Revolution, Sheffield played a crucial role in developing crucible and stainless steel. Sheffield boasts a multicultural society, with a large student population, and it is one of the safest and friendliest cities in the United Kingdom. Sheffield has seen a huge amount of redevelopment in the 21st century, and its gross value has shot up by 60% since 1997, with the economy increasing each year by around 5%.
While Sheffield may not be the most attractive city in the UK, thanks largely to its industrial history, it still manages to feature a large amount of green space. There are a number of rivers that flow through Sheffield, such as the River Don, the River Rivelin, and Porter Brook. Unfortunately, this does make the area susceptible to flooding during some periods of the year. The Peak District National Park can be found to the south of the city, and was first founded in 1951, making it the UK’s first national park. Encompassing 555 square miles, the park offers greenery in abundance, with its boundaries reaching Derbyshire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, and West Yorkshire, as well as South Yorkshire.

Sheffield is ranked the third largest English district in terms of population, which stands at 563,749, according to a 2014 census. In terms of the ethnic makeup in Sheffield, 83.69% are of white descent. There is a fair sized Asian demographic in the city, with 8.3% defined as Asian or Asian British, while there is a 3.63% representation of the Black community.
There is a large number of 20-24 year olds in the city, thanks mainly to the two universities. There are also more births than deaths in Sheffield, which has only served to augment the population alongside net immigration. By 2037, the city is projected to have increased by around 75,800 people.
Nearby schools
There is a huge amount of choice in Sheffield when it comes to education. Aston Fence Junior and Infant School, Stocksbridge Junior School, and Dobcroft Junior School are three really highly rated primary schools, while Tapton Secondary School, Sheffield High School, and Silverdale School are excellent choices for secondary education. There are 2 universities in Sheffield, The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.
Getting around
As there is no inner-city railway service, the bus or the newly developed Sheffield Supertram are the most popular ways to get around. The M1 motorway is right next door, which connects to major cities like Leeds, Leicester, and London. The national rail service allows you to get the train to the capital in around 2 and a half hours, and runs to London St Pancras station. There is also the Robin Hood international airport, situated just 18 miles away.
Local shops
For all your shopping needs, look no further than Meadowhall, Sheffield's finest shopping centre, which includes shops such as Argos, Apple, and Debenhams, as well as a whole host of other popular retail outlets. For those who prefer to shop on the high street instead, the city centre is host to shops such as John Lewis and Marks & Spencer's, and in Devonshire Street, there is a nice selection of small independent stores and boutiques.
The Sheffield Tap is located in the station and is decorated as a first-class dining hall, offering a wide array of beers and ales. The Riverside is slightly different, located on the River Don, and is one of the best beer gardens in the city, with live music and quality burgers on offer.
