Located on the southern coast of England, West Sussex is a scenic county situated between Hampshire, East Sussex and Surrey, and is conveniently located very close to the city of London. The county mixes a blend of urban and rural areas, and is made up of the county town of Chichester, as well as districts Crawley, Horsham, Arun, Worthing, and other.

The county's ideal proximity to London means that several businesses and companies have taken an interest in various areas in West Sussex, including Rolls Royce Motor Cars, RSA Insurance Group, Thales UK and The Body Shop. The location of Gatwick Airport near Crawley also draws in various big names, and it can claim to be the home of huge names Virgin Atlantic and British Airways.

The latest census report indicates that the population of West Sussex was just under 807,000, with the pretty market town of Horsham making up the highest percentage of that population at 131,000. This is closely followed by Chichester and Crawley at approximately 113,000 and 106,000 respectively. The age range is fairly even, with the majority of those living in the area aged between 20 and 65. West Sussex's closeness to London means it is ideal for commuters wishing to work in the capital.

Nearby schools

West Sussex's general standard of education is very high, with the vast majority of schools and colleges receiving at least a 'Good' in their most recent Ofsted reports. Notable primary schools include Pound Hill Junior School and The Oaks Primary School, both near Crawley, and both of which have received high satisfaction levels in recent surveys collected back from parents and pupils.

Similarly, secondary schools are all fairly high performing, and offer a range of speciality subjects throughout West Sussex. These include the Hazelwick and Holy Trinity Church of England schools, which consistently receive high exam results, as well as specialist language school Imberhorne, located in East Grinstead.

Notable Sixth-Form colleges include The College of Richard Collyer in Horsham. With its students' consistently high performances in AS and A2 levels, it has achieved an 'Outstanding' in recent Ofsted reports, and is widely thought to be one of the best sixth form colleges in the country. There is also The Weald School in Billingshurst, which is a high performing technology school and sports college.

Getting around

West Sussex's convenient location between larger UK cities means that transport is a major plus in the area. As well as being near several key roads, such as the M23 to London and the A23 to London or Brighton, several train routes serve the area, including the speedy Gatwick Express. These train links travel between Southampton and London, with fast-trains running from Three Bridges station near Crawley which take just over 30 minutes to arrive in Central London.

There are several bus routes, served mostly by Metrobus, which provide transport around the larger towns in the county. Crawley is also home to the award winning Crawley Luxury coach hire which is available for travel around West Sussex and the nearby counties.

West Sussex is well known for being the home of Gatwick Airport; located just 2.7 miles from Crawley, the airport is the second largest international airport in the UK and offers flights from various providers all over the world.

Local shops

West Sussex is rife with opportunities for days out. Be it shopping, exploring or relaxing you have on the agenda. There are several remnants of its Roman history scattered about the county, from monuments such as the Novium, in which Roman bathhouse remains can be found, and the preserved Bignor Roman Villa. There are also various castles and botanical gardens to visit for those interested in the county's inherent beauty on offer.

For those more interested in shopping, the market town of Horsham has a great selection of independent stalls on offer, as well as a large shopping complex; Swan Walk. Crawley too has the large County Mall, in which hundreds of high street shops can be found. Steyning's Cobblestone Walk is a wonderfully preserved little street with various independently run shops, and the county town of Chichester has a quaint atmosphere; expertly combining designer boutiques with unusual independent shops along its High Street.
