Retirement living - Independence with peace of mind for the over 60s

The Whittlesey Retirement Living development will be an intimate collection of 32 one and two bedroom apartments for homeowners aged 60 and over. All apartments are planned to feature a fully-fitted kitchen, electric kitchen window, a bathroom with heated towel rail, raised height electrical socket, a fitted wardrobe in the main bedroom and energy-efficient heating.

The development will be located approximately six miles east of Peterborough, in the old Fenland market town of Whittlesey, which has a population of 15,000. Transport options include regular bus services, as well as the nearby railway station of Whittlesea (which still maintains the town’s original spelling). Trains run direct to Peterborough, Cambridge, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leicester and Ipswich.

Key dates for your diary

Construction start date, sales release and first occupation are still to be confirmed and are subject to planning permission.

Local area

Whittlesey has several parks, including Manor Field, and is bordered by the Briggate River. The town is also home to several historic churches – St Mary’s dates back to the 15th century and St Andrew’s may date to the 17th. The Retirement Living development is in the very centre of town, just 200m from Market Place, where the local market is held every Friday. You’ll also find all the modern amenities here, including a NatWest, Boots pharmacy, butchers, grocers, florist, cafes, restaurants and beauty salons. For those looking to do some casual exercise, the leisure centre is within walking distance and has tailored activities for retirees.

Despite having a small local population, Whittlesey puts on a number of events, such as the Whittlesey Summer Festival, held every September, which has featured classic car expositions, an Italian food fair and carnival rides. The traditional Straw Bear festival is still celebrated on the second weekend in January and sees people from the surrounding areas – as well as interested tourists – join in the festivities. A definite must-see for any Whittlesey local!
