Mums and dads are being urged to ensure they have adequate home insurance after a survey revealed £16.8 million worth of damage is caused annually by kids' parties.

Parents across the UK have had to contend with a massive £1.4 million of damage caused during house parties held without permission.

According to Sainsbury's this sort of damage may not be covered by some policies if guests were invited via a social networking site, for example.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's home insurance manager, said: "The rise of sites such as Facebook and Bebo has dramatically changed the way teenagers in particular invite 'friends' to their parties.

"It's not uncommon to have parties with many hundreds of people attending and when such events get out of hand some insurers may suggest that the homeowner failed to take due care of the property and could refuse to pay up."

He added that parents should warn their children of the "potential pitfalls" of holding a party without adults present and of inviting strangers. ADNFCR-1286-ID-18749811-ADNFCR
