The amount of energy consumed in a home is still a priority for householders -even if it is now for financial reasons rather than the environment, experts claim.
Homeowners are still concerned about the amount of heating and lighting they need although they are more interested in saving money than the planet, according to the National Association of Estate Agents.
Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the association, said that "in the same way that there are fewer cars on the road and people are driving more slowly [because of high fuel costs], people are becoming much more cost conscious of the amount that it's costing them to heat and light the properties".
"So I think once we get into the habit of doing something it will have a knock on effect in the medium to long-term."
Jon McGowan of the Energy Savings Trust added that there are ways for homeowners to save money and help the environment.
"For less than £500 you can insulate all the cavities which will save you about £120 a year, which is a very short-term pay back," he noted.
