Smart meters could be a great device for environmentally-conscious homeowners, it has been suggested.

Peter Jenkins, head of communications and public affairs at the Energy Retail Association, hinted that the technology could be a great way for people to keep track of their fuel bills.

Commenting on their potential appeal to homeowners, he said: "Smart meters will revolutionise the way customers think about and pay for their energy."

Mr Jenkins went on to add: "Customers will be able to see where they can make changes to their behaviour in order to save energy and save money."

While companies could be eager to launch the product nationwide by 2020, he noted that the timetable for this delivery remains uncertain.

According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the meters will be universally implemented in UK homes by this date.

The government claims it will be the largest such transformation in the world.ADNFCR-1286-ID-19434630-ADNFCR
