Property description
A charming cottage in an extraordinary waterside setting on the west bank of the River Tamar. Outstandingly beautiful views. Undeveloped setting. Substantially restored. Lower floor sitting room, 3 bedrooms (1 with en-suite bathroom), family bathroom, Large and secluded garden, detached studio, parking.
Halton Quay lies in the area designated as being of Outstanding Natural Beauty and also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, overlooking the River Tamar, between the historic estates of Pentillie and Cotehele. The river is wide at this point and forms a broad tidal sweep and is renowned as one of the most beautiful and unspoilt places in Cornwall. The late Sir John Betjeman, the former Poet Laureate called it The most beautiful place in England . On the Quay is one of the smallest chapels in Britain and nearby there are overgrown ruins of former mill works and two listed former limekilns. Ornithologists and nature lovers will find this an unrepeatable setting, with a quayside area, which can be used at any stage of the tide, and a predominance of curlew and shelduck. Fishermen are frequently known to catch bass and flounders from the Quay.
Facilities in the village of St Dominick, one mile away, include the Who'd of Thought It public house, a primary school, church, Post Office and shop. St Mellion International Golf and Country Club is about three miles distant and the town of Callington about four miles away. The A38 at Saltash is about seven miles distant and there is a recently extended Waitrose Store on the northern outskirts of the town.
The 18th century former stables were substantially rebuilt by the present owners some years ago and were redesigned to take advantage of the aspect in this extraordinary waterside setting. Arranged in a reversed level format, not only to enable all rooms, except one of the bathrooms, to take advantage of the views, but also to allow the main living level to gain direct access to the large garden at the rear. This is a notably intriguing and welcoming house. A useful detached studio lies just to the rear of the house, within the garden. The building adjoins another property to the north but this does not compromise privacy.
