situation:
The island is situated on Towan Beach. At low tide this beach can be accessed from the harbour by steps leading down from the far end of the quay. Rock pools abound on this side and Towan Island, one of Newquay's best known landmarks, lies at the eastern end of the bay. At high tide the island is cut off from the mainland and is only accessible via the pedestrian suspension bridge high above the water. With seven miles of sandy beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean on the North Cornwall Coast, Newquay is one of the most popular destinations in Cornwall. Once an isolated fishing community, it still retains its unspoilt harbour, where at high water the local fishermen unload their catch/baskets of crabs. Water sports are well catered for in Newquay, with both Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay being venues for many leading surf competitions. Rising from a picturesque old harbour to spread majestically along the dramatic cliff tops, Newquay is an unrivalled natural setting acknowledged as one of the finest stretches of coastline in Europe. Newquay town offers excellent amenities, including shopping, restaurants, leisure facilities and good local and national rail and road connections, as well as flight connections to national airports.
Description:
The house is wonderfully situated atop the rocky outcrop with more than 180 degree views of the sea and offering beautifully presented accommodation in the centre of Newquay yet discretely isolated from it. The house is thought to have been built in the early 20th century and has been extended since. The house is approached from the mainland via steps, through a private doorway into a walled paved area with storage shed and entrance onto the private suspension bridge. The bridge approaches the house from the south side and leads straight into the well maintained garden which continues round the entire property. The bridge is thought to have been built in 1901 by the reputable bridge engineers Harpers of Aberdeen. Some approximate 30 meters in length and a meter wide, the bridge is suspended about 23 meters above the sandy beach below. The house itself enjoys both a covered and open verandah allowing the sea views to be enjoyed all year round. The interior is light and airy, with bay windows, French doors and a conservatory, making most of The Island's spectacular aspect. The ground floor rooms include a large drawing room as the principal reception room, dining room with adjoining conservatory and a kitchen/breakfast room. There are two bedrooms, one currently used as a study and a luxurious shower room. Upstairs, part of the roof space has been converted into a spacious master bedroom suite, with its own dressing room and bathroom, and large windows overlooking the beach. Outside the garden enjoys maximum sunshine and has been carefully maintained to provide a wonderful private setting in which to relax and enjoy the truly unique position.
