Burglars coming to the fore on dark evenings
26th Oct 2012
Winter and the cover of darkness that it provides can allow rich pickings for those unscrupulous characters willing to put other people out of pocket by breaking and entering and stealing personal belongings from UK property.
According to Halifax, the cost of burglaries last year in terms of home insurance claims amounted to some £14.5 million, with a swell to 9,000 home thefts taking place when the cover of earlier nights kicked in to allow burglars to operate without detection.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager, Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Being burgled causes homeowners a great deal of stress and upset, not to mention the financial loss. We often see these claims rise around this time of year, with the average burglary claim reaching more than £1,500."
He added that many people have home insurance policies that will cover the loss of items such as TVs, computers, and other expensive possessions, but that this will not help to make up for the loss of sentimental items such as family heirlooms, advising that people instead take steps to protect these themselves.
To do this, it can be a good idea to fit extra locks to your door, or to make sure that you leave lights on when out of the home to make it look like someone is home.
