Facebook warning as Christmas house party season gets into full swing
12th Dec 2012
Christmas is on the horizon and tens of households will want to take the opportunity to show off their UK flat while having a festive knees-up.
However, events this week paint a stark reminder about the nightmare which a party might bring, particularly if you have just moved into a new property.
Around £30,000 worth of damage was caused at a home in Billericay, Essex, when 800 teenage Facebook guests turned up and ransacked the building.
David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, warned that advertising on social networking sites could quickly get out of control, with invitations spreading virally.
Owners of new homes should settle on a specific guest list before preparing the property. Expensive items can be locked in an upstairs room to ensure that damage is not caused, while a smoking area outside might be a good addition.
Provide a place for people to take off their shoes so that the carpet does not get ruined, and finally get the detergent ready just in case of that red wine spillage.
