Protect the home against the risk of flooding

26th Sep 2012

UK homeowners should make sure that they are protecting their properties for sale over the course of coming weeks, after it was revealed that a large area of the country is expected to be battered further by a deluge of rain.

Areas of North Yorkshire, Scotland and Newcastle were affected by floods earlier in the week (September 25th) and Lloyds TSB said that it is vital to do everything possible to ensure that the risk of damage in the home and insurance claims was minimised.

Tim Downes, regional manager, Personal Claims Consultants, said: "We are advising homeowners who are at risk to take steps now to reduce the risk of damage to their homes, and to monitor local news and weather updates."

The bank said that there are a number of measures that people can take to make sure that their property is protected from rainwater as best they can.

It added that to reduce the amount of water that can get in, placing sandbags at windows and doors can be a great start.

Turning off the mains will also be important, while people should try to lift everything they can to upper areas of the house.

Finally, it will be important to have an insurer's number at hand in case a claim needs to be made.
