Art deco 'set to be big' in 2012

21st May 2012

Art deco is set to be one of the biggest home interior themes in 2012 as homeowners look to the past for inspiration, one expert on the subject has predicted.

Ellie Tenant, interiors journalist, acknowledged that everybody is talking about the Jubilee, and predicted that many people will be decorating in a temporary way for Jubilee tea parties with bunting and things.

However, in a more permanent home decor sense, she does not expect to see householders rushing to paint our homes red, white and blue.

Instead, the expert has observed more nostalgic themes coming through, including the 1920s art deco look.

"Perhaps because of the recession it's been very fashionable to be pared back and simple recently, but one of the things I've really seen coming through is a glamorous, decadent kind of look," Ms Tenant said.

She added that, as a film version of The Great Gatsby is coming out this year, it is likely to influence how people decorate, as well as other trends on the high street.

"I've seen some of the autumn/winter collections and they're definitely very bling – lots of mirrored surfaces, lots of art deco patterns. It's a real antidote to the pared back simplicity that we've had," the expert commented.

People hoping to follow the trend can bring their home in line in small ways, while cushions are a great way to update the whole living room in a flash.

"You can just buy a few bronze cushions, perhaps with a few ornate, art deco patterns on them and you'd have that look," Ms Tenant suggested.
