Landlords 'should visit properties frequently'

Buy to let property owners should frequently visit the houses and flats they own in order to check for any signs of damage or structural problems, it has been advised.
Nick Oldridge, a spokesperson for the DIY advice site Roofapedia, said that people renting can often not report structural problems, meaning that landlords should regularly look at their properties for structural damage.
"With landlords, a renter is not going to mention anything. I never did when I was a renter in regards to the fabric of the building as it wasn't my concern," he explained.
If people make the decision to become a landlord then they should attend the property at least once or twice yearly to do an inspection and see where they stand with regards to the roofing structure.
"If not, you could very quickly wipe out all that you gain from your rental income if you have a problem essentially," he added.
Ms Oldridge said that landlords are often less likely to notice roof problems, as they can be too busy monitoring what is happening inside the building.
It comes after Marie Parris, managing director of George Ellis, recently said it is vital that buy to let property owners maintain excellent levels of communication with their tenant.
