First generation smart meters

As I understand it, the current 1st generation of smart meters may have issues if you change suppliers because the smart functionality is not universal. I also understand that this problem with the 1st gen smart meters may not be rectified by 2020 with an upgrade and the 2nd generation smart meters are currently being evaluated. Can anyone confirm this is the case and if so is it still possible to change supplier with the current 1st Generation smart meter with them becoming dumb meters?

  • I would probably suggest getting in touch with your supplier - as I am sure they would be willing to replace the meter if they are not working properly.
