Hi, what's it like to live in Houston? Is it a good area to bring up a 1 year old? Any areas to avoid etc? All answers appreciated thanks.

Thinking of moving away from the hustle of town and moving here to raise my 1 year old but need more information from locals etc. Are primary schools good? Thanks.

  • Hi Stephenpark1 Hopefully you will get some advice from our contributors with first-hand experience of Houston, but in the meantime I can give you a little bit of information about the primary schools. There are two such establishments close by in the form of Houston Primary School and St Fillan's Primary School. Both of them are co-educational state schools, with the former being non-denominational and the latter Roman Catholic. Houston Primary's current building was opened in 1976, with a two-storey expansion added in 2007. Its website features the HMIE report from 2008 where inspectors identified a number of key strengths, including an outstanding ethos in the nursery and school, along with excellent leadership, partnerships with parents and teachers' use of IT to create stimulating lessons. St Fillan's is similar in that it is a nursery and primary school, and it promises to "provide a wide range of experiences and opportunities to develop the faith and learning of our children". From its HMIE report in 2008, it was recorded that parents expressed a "high level of satisfaction with almost all aspects of the school". It is definitely worth arranging a tour to help make your decision a little easier. Thanks, Scott
