If you take out a lease is a credit check done?

It depends entirely on the agent that you are applying through. The majority these days do carry out credit checks when it comes to giving leases, but there are still some which don't.
Even for the latter group, though, it's important to remember that you still need to be able to prove that you can afford to pay your rent on a monthly basis, no matter if they do a credit check or not.
This will include having a letter or other document from an employer that proves you have a steady and permanent full time job, with wages that will allow you to pay your rent each month without any issue. This is the main concern of both letting agents and landlords, after all.
For those that do carry out a credit check, however, there are ways around this if you think you are going to fail it, or indeed if you are turned down on this basis alone. Many agents will still be happy to take you on as long as you have a guarantor who can take on legal responsibility to pay the rent if you are unable to do so or simply don't for some reason.

All agents should do comprehensive reference checks (including a credit check). If you have concerns about the possible results, it's important to be upfront in the first place. If possible, offering a guarantor or rent upfront is a great way to grease the wheels. Hope that helps
