Debt attached to a property.

We are ready to complete on a repossessed property, but the day before contracts exchanged, our solicitors brought to our attention a charge being placed on our property. We were then told that the previous owner had charges on there from 20+ years ago, but passed away nine years ago. The property is now in his wife's name, but she is disputing the debt saying it is her husband's. We are now in limbo, as we are unsure what's happening. Can we proceed with the purchase as we want to, yet don't want to be stuck with the debt? What can we do?
