Buying the freehold complications

Hi, I was wandering how I go about buying the freehold of the property and what the complications of buying freehold are. I have a house worth around £90,000-£100,000. What is the cost of buying the freehold going to be? Plus I have never paid ground rent, since I brought the property. Nobody has ever asked for it. Don't know who to pay it to. If I was to buy the freehold, will I have to pay the past 20 years ground rent?

  • Hello Sally - it would really be dependent on the terms of the lease. Older leasehold properties have "peppercorn" ground rents - i.e. zero, so you may be ok. I would suggest contacting a good leasehold solicitor to review the lease.
