Renting with bad Credit Rating

Me and my Partner currently Rent from my aunt and Uncle who live elsewhere. We have a child and one on the way. I am not working at the moment, while my Partner works full time and earns 26,000 Pa. We need to move out of my aunts and uncles house and so have been looking at estate agents websites etc. When about to rent the Estate agents ask for a last landlord Refrence, A refrence from work and a credit check. My Partners credit rating is very very poor from years ago but its still on the system. So does this mean we will not be accepted? Evan though we will have a good Refrence from Landlord? I am worried that estate agents will not accept it because they are Family? I have read somewhere that people in our situation offer to pay 6 months in advance, We are not in the position to do that but are happy to pay a Deposit plus a months and a half rent in advance. This would be about £2,000 the rent a month on houses we are looking at is £750. Any advice will be appreciated.

  • Hi there I appreciate your difficulties and you should be comforted that you are not alone - our offices see many people in your situation every day. What you should do is what you have done here, be honest and up front about your situation at the start with your agent. Agents usually use reference agencies to recommend whether to accept a tenant or not so sometimes it is out of their hands. That said, many reference agencies will return with a poor reference but make suggestions on how to proceed and an offer of a larger deposit may well swing things in your favour. Keep trying and I'm sure you will find a landlord that is happy with you and your partner even if it isn't the first one.
