Deposits for rentals

Hello! I am moving over from a part of Canada that does not do rental deposits so I'm pretty confused about the whole thing. So far I've worked out that it's typically equivalent to about 6 weeks of rent, but is that to be paid in addition to the first month's rent? For instance, if I rent a £1000 PCM apartment and the deposit is £1500, is my first payment to the landlord £1000, £1500, or £3500? Thank you in advance!

  • Hello Katina, the deposit is typically one month´s rent and the landlord will be required to put in a government approved deposit scheme. There may be an extra deposit to pay if you have pets or maybe the landlord has perceived some kind of extra risk. I would imagine the £1,000 payment will be the first month´s rent in advance but this should all be in the Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement (AST) that you will be sent to read through. Feel free to post any other questions you may have. All the best with the move.
