What are the security deposit limitations?

I'm planning to relocate soon, hopefully, but the few landlords I contacted required a sum that felt way overpriced, so I would like to ask if there are any legal limitations to how much such a housing deposit can be? Tried googling but got overwhelmed.

  • Technically there is no limitation, however, I believe that if you pay anything over three months rent there are complications introduced for the Landlord. This isn't something I often come across in the area that I cover, so hopefully somebody else will be able to answer in more detail soon.

  • Hi Johnna, I agree with Lee - anything over three months is not a fair demand. Some landlords may be charging such a high amount to "filter out" certain types of people but I would say persevere and something will come your way where the charges are not so extortionate. If you are having difficulty, feel free to drop another message on here.
