Can I rent a property with a default on my credit file which is 3 year?

Hi me and my girlfriend are looking to rent a property in the Oxford area, I sadly went to a debt management company assumed that all the minimum payments were being met! When I checked my credit file it appeared I'd been paying under the minimum payment which I was never informed about! So now I feel that we can only use my girlfriends salary which is not great compared to what I now earn! Is there anyway I could rent with both our salaries to get a better home?

  • This will largely vary from Agent to Agent, however, all Agents now have a legal requirement to carry out some form of check on each adult (although not necessarily reference checks). As Agents use different referencing providers, they'll all have their own requirements. At our agency, for example, a default isn't necessarily the end of the world but you may require a guarantor. The best thing to do, is contact local reputable agents and be honest with them about your situation. They should be able to tell you whether this would result in an issue. You can find reputable agents by searching for them on the Association of Residential Letting Agents website.

  • Hi - sorry to hear about this. Do you have a guarantor who can back you up? If you can find someone, then it would certainly help. Also, if you can get some references from previous employers / landlords that would be good.
