When renting, how much does a renter normally have to pay up front?

I've never rented privately before and was just wondering what a normal amount is to have to pay upfront?

  • This will vary heavily dependent on area, however, you will almost always have to pay the first months rent in advance, and also a bond equivalent of 4 - 6 weeks rent. The best thing to do is contact your local letting agents and ask them what their policies are. There will most likely be fees to consider on top of this as well.

  • I have recently let property and the usual is one month's rent up front and a month's rent value + £100 as a deposit, on top of this you will have to pay credit check fees and admin costs which can vary from £75 to £300 depending on how many tenants are involved and specific agents fees. You may be able to knock these fees down if they are struggling to let the property.
