What was the land used for before they built the house in Welmen Way, Altrincham?

  • This is a hard question to answer exactly. You could use Land Registry to try and find out this information, or speak to the local authority. Which in Altrincham is Trafford. You can use however to find out all crime figures and much more information in that particular area.

  • I think you mean Welman Way in Altrincham near to the South Trafford College? My brother lives there - this used to be farmland which was gifted to the National Trust. The National Trust sold it to developers (Redrow etc). I don't know if detailed soil surverys were carried out by the developer but this would be normal - ask a Solicitor if you're buying. The land was farmland but it may have had historical uses which are unknown (note that most housing development over the last few years has been on potentially contaminated brownfield sites). You are right to be concerned about contaminated land when buying anywhere. On a practical level there have been no problems for my brother and he has lived there for 3 years.

  • Welman Way is near Altrincham Football Club and it used to be the British Gas Headquarters. The office block was demolished, the gas tanks removed and the land decontaminated around 2000.
