" proceed to purchase" in estate agent contract

A clause in my initial estate agent contract refers to their introductions of a buyer and fees being due after contract terminated. I ended the contract with them , and many months later, whilst with a new agent I received an offer from someone who turned out to have first viewed with the original agent. Their contract States their fee will be due if someone they introduced " proceeds to purchase " within 6 months of the contact ending. My question is whether " proceed to purchase " in legal terms , means the accepting of the offer ( which was within 6 months ) or exchange of contract ( which wasn't ) Any thoughts or advice would be helpful . Many thanks.
