Estate agent not securing house properly after viewing

We have a contract with an estate agent, 12 weeks with 6 weeks left to run. During this time we have had a lot of occasions when, following a viewing, the lights have been left on or the bathroom fan left running (often for hours at a time before we get home from work), and one occasion the agent left the front door open - not just unlocked but open! We have complained each time to the agent (by phone) but they do not show any diligence and when a light was left on again yesterday it was the last straw. Would this be classed as a breach of contract? We are so fed up with them now.

  • Sorry to hear this. It´s a tricky one as I would imagine that negligence on the Estate Agent´s part would not be stipulated on the contract. I think your first point of call would be the Property Ombudsman: 01722 333306. If you have no luck there, feel free to drop another message here and we can look into it further.

  • Another thought on this - if it´s a chain estate agency, you might also want to contact the Head Office?

  • They should be ashamed of themselves and let you go! If they don’t, contact their Ombudsman as they have failed in their duty of care.
