The name Elephant & Castle is believed to be derived from the original publican who used the Coventry coats of Arms as a pub sign. At the end of the 19th Century, Jane Ryland, of Shakespeare Hall, Rowington, was a regular church goer and her route to St Lawrence Church was via Queens Drive and past The Elephant. She was not impressed with the drinking going on as she passed and so decided to buy the Inn and close it down. In return, she set up the Working Mens Club for the men of the village.
