Property description

A brief history of the property

Bushy Lees Farmhouse is a Grade II Listed sixteenth century timber-framed house with red brick infill with a tiled, hipped roof with gablets. It is likely to have been built around 1590 as a small yeoman farmhouse, and its original floor plan is of a type that is found throughout Kent and Sussex from that time.
Bushy Lees was a working farm until the mid-1960s. It was renovated in the late 1970's, and a modern wing was added to make an l-shaped house. The current owner has traced the tenants back to 1684 and ownership of the land it stands on back through the Knights Templar in 1199 to Odo, Bishop of Bayeaux in 1067. In its time it has been know as Bushleaves, Busheleaves, Bushy Leaves, Bush Lees, Fisher's Acre, Bushy Leaze, Bushylees Farm, Bushylees Cottage, Bushylees and Bushy Leas Farmhouse. An old map dated 1781 shows that the farm was at the time quite extensive, with a large 'frontage' on Pear Tree Lane, and extending down to what is now the Wainscott Bypass.
