Extending to 1,600 sq ft, Archway Studios is an award-winning example of architecture’s ability to transform a constraint into an asset. Designed by Undercurrent Architects, the space ingeniously contrasts industrial steel exteriors with expansive, contoured interiors to produce a new paradigm for inhabitable infrastructure.

This beautifully conceived space occupies an intricate position nestled beneath a nineteenth century railway viaduct in south London. The design billows up and out, above the archway itself, forming a slender atrium via a flowing system of curves, arranged to scoop, capture and draw natural light down into the living quarters below.

Currently combining a family home and a photography studio, the communal areas sit at various levels beneath the three-storey atrium, with adjoining private rooms including two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a study. Slender steel foils collectively form a protective acoustic shell around the whole house, so that the bedrooms and the open-plan areas are undisturbed by the sounds of the railway above. For these reasons, the house won the London Architecture Awards’ ‘House of the Year’ in 2013.

The house is excellently positioned for the green spaces of Kennington and Burgess Park. The immediate area is home to many exciting new restaurants, bars and cafes including, Louie Louie, Orbit Brewery, The Manor of Walworth pub, Golazio craft pizza and beer, and Elephant and Castle’s Artworks project. Pullens Yards artists community and creative hub is within walking distance, as is the new development around Walworth Town Hall and Arts Academy Gallery.

Kennington and Elephant and Castle stations are nearby, providing access to central London via the Northern and Bakerloo lines, as well as Overground services further afield. The surrounding area is also well served by a frequent bus service into The City, West End and beyond.
