The Crumlin Road Courthouse is a fascinating Grade II Listed building that represents an important part of the history of British prisons. Architect Charles Lanyon designed the building based on London’s Pentonville prison and the Crumlin Courthouse was built by James Carlisle in an innovative style known as a “radial cellular system”. This design separated the building into four separate wings and also linked it to the nearby Crumlin Road Gaol by way of an infamous tunnel. The original Crumlin Road Courthouse was completed in 1850 and after almost 150 years of continuous use as part of Northern Ireland’s prison service, the 2-acre site closed in 1998. Since then, the building remained neglected, falling extensively into disrepair until the developer acquired the site in March 2017. It has earmarked £25m to redevelop the site and transform it into a luxury hotel offering the brand’s unique guest experience. The hotel will be named after Charles Lanyon to celebrate one of Belfast’s most prominent and influential architects of the Victorian Era.

The Lanyon will comprise 71 luxury suites with a restaurant, bar, basement spa and rooftop event space that will revitalize the disused site and return it to the local community as an operating hotel asset. The exciting plans include reopening the infamous tunnel connecting Courtroom 1 to the Crumlin Road Gaol, with extensive restoration to create a compelling tourist attraction. The original listed buildings consent application was submitted in December 2017, detailing proposed alterations, extensions and conversion of the Crumlin Courthouse into the Lanyon Hotel. The brand went on to submit a full planning application in June this year for proposed change of use and development of the existing site which has since been given the green light by Belfast City Council. The developer is on target to open the doors of the Lanyon Hotel in 2019, building on the brand’s significant presence in Belfast to deliver prime hotel stock in a high-demand tourist market.
