Built in the 1880's the house has been home to two American artists. Most notably, Anna Lea Merritt, who was the first woman artist to have a painting in a British national collection. "Love Locked Out" now hangs in Tate Britain. Romaine Brooks also lived at the house. She worked mostly in Paris and Capri and specialized in portraiture.
