With unparalleled views across the South Downs, this extraordinary house was designed by the former president of riba, Michael Manser in 1985. The five-bedroom detached house is cut dramatically into the landscape, with private gardens that unfold below. Manser’s drawing of the house entitled “Neo Palladian Villa in West Sussex” was exhibited at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition.

The building is two parts divided by a single lane; on one side is a converted studio with hardstanding for a number of cars, and on the other is the main house, swimming pool and garden. Entrance is via steel gates to a covered porch created by the first-floor overhang. The ground floor space is expansive with bedrooms and bathrooms either side of a central corridor which leads to a self-contained guest suite.

A cantilevered staircase accesses the first floor living accommodation and further bedrooms. Above the main entrance is the kitchen and dining space, with sliding doors that open to a balcony on the garden side. Behind the kitchen is a large utility room. The steel frame of the upper floor allows for a single run of glazed sliding doors along the southern façade that has access to a balcony that can be covered by a retractable awning designed to shelter the south-facing glazing from the sun and allowing for year-round use.

At the far end of the upper floor is a beautiful master suite, with a bedroom and en-suite bathroom at the back, and a dressing / sitting room at the front. A discreet door opens to the adjoining roof terrace, an extension designed by Manser at a later date.

The kitchen and master suite flank the main reception space, an open-plan room which has a striking wood-veneer fireplace as a centrepiece that obscures the staircase and hall space behind. Along the back of the house are two bedrooms either side of a family bathroom.

The current owners have beautifully landscaped the gardens that surround the house, bringing in grasses and verges that give the landscape some vibrancy in the winter months. Olive trees give some all-year-round greenery and neat hedgerows give the landscape some definition and structure.

The house occupies a wonderfully isolated position, seemingly alone on the hill with a spectacular rural view towards the South Downs. The thriving local town of Haslemere is just under five miles away, where there is a Waitrose and many other specialist shops as well as pubs, restaurants and a range of schools.

The train station at Haslemere runs a frequent service to London Waterloo in under an hour. There are alternative services from Witley Station. By road there is access to the A3 at Milford which provides a road link to London and the south coast and via the M25 to both Heathrow and Gatwick Airport.
