The charming Bedfordshire village of Yelden is very sought after and has a thriving local community and has grown around the beautiful 16th century St Marys church which it is believed had once been used by John Bunyan.
There is easy access to both Wellingborough and Bedford railway stations, for the commuters offering services into London in 40 minutes from Bedford and 48 minutes from Wellingborough.

This lovely home, which boasts a large south-facing garden, occupies a superb location within the charming village of Yelden. “We bought the property twelve years ago and I have to say that it was a real combination of both the house and the location that sold it to us, ” says Linda. It’s very peaceful here and we are surrounded by the most glorious countryside, you step out through the garden gate into miles of footpaths, bridleways and endless wildlife, including badgers, deer, foxes, owls and red kites. There are two great pubs within a mile of each other, both serving delicious freshly prepared food and holding events such as a Charity Quiz’s. Yelden has a thriving community, there’s always something going on such as the annual Summer Ball, the Strawberry Fair, village bbq’s and Safari Suppers, as well as a various charity events throughout the year. The people here are so welcoming, while leaving you to enjoy your privacy. It’s an absolute gem of a place and we’re going to be very sad to leave.”

“Highcroft is a lovely big family home that sits just a few doors down from the church and has views of the landscape that was a motte and bailey castle dating back to medieval times. The rooms are all nicely proportioned, the layout flows beautifully and both the dining room and the main living room have patio doors that lead out into our beautiful conservatory, so there’s a really nice feeling of connection with the garden. It’s a house that has been well thought out and beautifully designed, and we’ve been extremely happy here.”

“The garden is large and very peaceful having been beautifully landscaped, but with low maintenance in mind, ” continues Linda. “We have a large patio terrace and a decked seating area so there’s lots of space for alfresco entertaining. There are open lawns, a pretty pond and an array of pretty shrubs and trees so all year round there’s something lovely to look at, which includes a wonderful array of birds, not least our resident pheasants (Mack and Mable) and moorhens”.

Favourite Room: “My favourite room is without doubt the conservatory; it’s the focal point of the house, ” says Linda. “We can sit in there and enjoy the most magical view of the garden, wildlife and the pond with its tranquil waterfall”.

Favourite aspect of the grounds or surrounding area: “Our immediate surroundings are so peaceful that you can sit out in the garden and feel miles from anywhere, and yet we are by no means isolated, ” says Linda. “Rushden, which is just a ten minutes drive away, is a lovely little town that caters for just about every need. Rushden Lakes is a new retail development which includes a Waitrose and M&S, amongst other large retailers. There is a fantastic restaurant complex built around a pretty lake and wildlife conservation area operated by the Wildlife Trust. A Multi-screen cinema is opening in the summer of this year.
Places such as St Neots, Huntingdon and Northampton are easily accessible by car. A forty-minute train ride takes you into the heart of London. We are also just a fifteen-minute drive from Kimbolton, which has a much sought-after private school and we’re within the catchment area for Sharnbrook School, which again is highly sought after so this is a wonderful place to bring up a family.

Memorable event (if not another favourite room or unique feature): “The previous owners turned what was the integral garage into an almost self-contained en-suite room for their children’s live in Nanny, ” says Linda, “however we’ve always used it as a home gym. It could of course provide extra accommodation for guests or it could even be used as a home office space”.

What they’ll miss most / why they are leaving: “We have been so happy here for the past twelve years but having retired we’re hoping to find a new home in a location every bit as lovely as this, just on a much smaller scale, ” says Linda. “In terms of what we’ll miss i’d have to say the village and the wonderful people who live here. It’s a real hidden gem.”
