Historic note. The Sea House was originally commissioned by Winston Churchill in honour of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe whom commanded Britain's Royal Navy Grand Fleet at the 1916 Battle of Jutland; the First World Wars' biggest and bloodiest battle. Jellicoe used the house as a family seaside retreat.
By the 1930s the Sea House was the one time home of Russell Thorndike, creator of the infamous 18th Century Doctor Syn smuggling novels. Both he and his sister, theatre legend Dame Sybil Thorndike, describe the house in their various writings and refer often to their time here overlooking the sea within their beloved Dymchurch.
The Sea House still features strongly in the bi- annual 'Day of Syn' held in Dymchurch and remains an important feature in local history.
