Description

City’s greenest banking village
38 minutes Bank to Esher

West lodge is one of a pair of late 18th Century red brick Gate Houses built at the entrance of the exclusive and sort after Esher Place. The historic grounds of the 15th Century Esher Place with its links to Henry VIII, Cardinal Wolsey and Elizabeth I, of which only Wayneflete Tower still remains and of which the grounds now make up the prestigious Esher Park Estate.

The Gate House consists of a double storey to the centre of the property with single storeys on either side and offers a wealth of period features as would be expected of a Grade II listed property.
The ground floor comprises of an entrance hall leading into the large reception room with wood beamed ceiling and open fire place. This in turn leads to the bright and spacious kitchen/breakfast room which further boasts a separate utility room. Also to the ground floor are two double bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower room. The first floor is dedicated to the master bedroom which benefits from an en-suite bathroom and dressing room.

As well as having a secluded garden and beautiful patio areas, the Gate House over looks the conservation area of Esher Green which retains much of the character of a rural village, with a terrace of pretty cottages to one side and with avenues of trees defining the views towards Christ Church to the front. The property is also just a stones throw from the vibrant Esher High Street and a 15 minute walk to the train station with a direct line into London Waterloo. The property is typically a 25 minute drive to Heathrow and a around a 40 minute drive to Gatwick.

Sweet memories from the owners John and Paula:
As travel writers and authors, we have loved living with history for 40 years, as we restored our little palace home, whose architecture replicas nearby Hampton Court Palace. West Lodge is reputedly one of Henry Eighth’s hunting lodges, and one of few ancient buildings remaining in one of Queen Victoria’s favourite village retreats.
West Lodge sits atop The Surrey Hills, right on Esher village Green opposite the local Church and Surrey’s best pub, with sweeping lawns and distant views as far as Wembley Stadium’s famous arch and you can see (but not hear) jets landing at London Heathrow. Our own little palace blends Tudor and Gothic architecture, with England’s oldest surviving Lodge House Gothic windows.
Real stuff of fairy tale legends – Heathrow and Gatwick are easily accesbile and we are a short walk to stations which can get you in the City of London in under 40 minutes, and we walk just two minutes to Waitrose, village restaurants and the cinema.
New owners can expect passing tourists to ask "how old is your lovely property?", and we relish in telling enquirers that our home is a very happy one - wonderfully, atmospheric and romantic, all of the neighbours are friendly as were some previous long-time owners, including a Royal Navy commodore who beamed his home with ancient timbers from England’s fighting fleets.
