Sandyhills is located half way between Sweetheart Abbey and Dundrennan Abbey, which was a resting place for the medieval pilgrims walking between the two.

Bridgend Cottage originally comprised of a single storey cottage, approximately 300 years old, which was extensively renovated, modernised, altered and extended to the rear at first floor level approximately 27 years ago by the current owners. The property in the past has been used as a residential home and a three star rated holiday home.

The main walls of the original cottage are of solid stone construction, painted externally, strapped and lined with plaster finish internally except in the Lounge where the walls are painted stone above timber dado lining. It has an internal floor area of 157m2.

The History of the Cottage:

Bridgend Cottage was formerly a part of a Clachan to serve the estate of Cairngill. The estate joiner lived in the property and the current Lounge was his workshop. The shop opposite was the then Blacksmith's workshop and at one time there was a pool where the beach car park is now. When the new wheel rims had been fitted, the wheels were rolled down into the pool to cool down the hot iron. It is understood that the mill that sits across the burn, Barnhourie Mill, milled oats and the buildings at Douglas Hall, opposite the caravan site, previously formed the Home Farm for the Cairngill Estate.

Bridgend Recreation Hall was part of the now Lounge within the cottage. In times gone by Carpet Bowls was played in the winter and scars still show on the panelling. Back in the 1970's the Hall was still being used to book Sunday School trips in case of wet weather, so the children could enjoy their tea and party games indoors, the Lounge to this day is designed with this in mind, you just have to look at the pool table.

General information

Sandyhills is a sheltered bay with a beach of golden sand and views out over the Solway Firth towards Cumbria on a stretch of coastline known colloquially as ‘The Scottish Riviera’. Southwest of Scotland, which is famous for its beautiful scenery, mild climate and excellent sailing. The Solway Yacht Club is based in the picturesque village of Kippford where there is also a hotel with restaurant and the village of Rockcliffe where there is a hotel/restaurant and tearoom. Some of the finest beaches in Scotland are found along the Solway coast and the surrounding countryside is undulating and highly attractive. There are fine walks along the coast and inland with excellent bird watching in the Solway Firth where there is an rspb reserve and geese sanctuary at Mersehead. Dumfries & Galloway in general is renowned for its bird watching with a Red Kite Trail and regular sightings of ospreys.

Additional recreational facilities in the area include golf, with an 18-hole course nearby at Colvend Bay and the renowned championship course at Southerness about 8 miles to the east. There is also fishing and shooting available to let nearby. Colvend has a good village shop, primary school and café while there is a broader range of shops, schools and services in both Dalbeattie and Castle Douglas.

Dumfries, the County Town for the region offers a good selection of various supermarkets, other retail facilities and a variety of local amenities and leisure activities, Dumfries also boosts its own University and Campus (University of the West of Scotland). The new Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary opened December 2017.

Communications are very good with railway stations in Dumfries and Lockerbie and the M74/M6 motorway network only 36 miles away. There are regular flights to other parts of the UK, Ireland and continental Europe from Prestwick Airport which is about 83 miles to the north, and Newcastle Airport (107 miles) also offers a good range of domestic and international flights.
