About this property
This immaculate two-bedroom first-floor apartment lies within an art deco former school building in the heart of Nottingham’s Meadows Green, close to the banks of the River Trent. East-west facing, this apartment bears the hallmarks of its previous incarnation while prioritising a truly modern way of open-plan living, where 1930s charm is fused with a joyful interplay of sociable, lofty and flowing living spaces. The apartment has private outdoor space overlooking the cloistered communal courtyard and is ideally positioned for the plethora of restaurants, pubs and independent shops in West Bridgford village and the city centre, both around a 15-minute walk away.
The Tour
Mundella House is a two-storey building lying on a quiet residential road in the heart of the Old Meadows Area, adjacent to Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment. Defined by its art deco features, this former school melds understated classical elements with modernist geometric styling. Hefty and embossed red brickwork is punctuated by large top-hung windows, forming a handsome and rhythmic streetscape.
The building retains great charm and character, harking to its origins throughout. A shared double doorway, crowned by decorative leaded lights, leads to the impressive entrance hall with original terrazzo flooring. Beyond lies the enticing communal cloistered courtyard – a sheltered spot to enjoy alfresco coffees this area also provides a lovely, quiet place to work outdoors.
This apartment sits on the first floor, accessed via the original school stairway and open walkways, edged in columns and pergolas, encouraging verdant, fragrant climbing planting to soften the boundaries.
Entrance to the apartment is a beautifully bright lobby space – a lovely place to meet and greet and with a handy built-in cupboard for coats and shoes. Beyond lies a clarify of vision and well considered details. Impressive high ceilings, oversized windows and oak parquet flooring, laid in a herringbone pattern, create a striking first impression.
The rooms are bathed in abundant natural light, and uniquely within Mundella House, this home has uninterrupted and far-reaching views towards parkland, trees and gardens. This ensures constant visual communication between the inside and outside. The east and west aspects draw in a soft morning light in the early hours and wash the spaces in an excellent quality of warm light throughout the day.
To the immediate right, the expansive primary living area has soaring ceiling heights, creating a welcoming and generous sense of space and volume. Arranged in a versatile open layout, there is plenty of room to gather, relax, cook and dine. The kitchen sits to one side; clean lines of simply detailed grey cabinetry house appliances and plentiful storage, topped with white worktops providing copious working surfaces.
The main bedroom is positioned on the east side of the apartment. A peaceful space, this retreat has similar qualities to the living room and kitchen; high ceilings and large glazed apertures draw in soft light and frame views of neighbouring rooftops, gardens and skylines. The second bedroom is similarly generous, with views of the park.
The bathroom layout was reconfigured to create a clean, modern space, with each component selected to create ease of function, including a separate bath and shower. There is a further WC off the entrance hall.
Outdoor Space
The apartment opens onto the east-facing walkway, where directly in front it has private outdoor space. This is a lovely spot to grow some potted plants and herbs, and to enjoy a lazy morning coffee reading the paper or an evening glass of wine.
Residents of Mundalla House also have access to the peaceful, central courtyard. It is a quiet and secluded space, attracting occupants to mingle and dine alfresco. It also provides a terrific place to work outdoors on warmer days.
The Area
The Old Meadows Area is an appealing residential location on the southern edge of Nottingham, close to Victoria Embankment and the banks of the River Trent. The Meadows Recreation ground and the Memorial Gardens also sit alongside. Chock full of broad-leafed trees, and with acres of unfolding grassland these provide enticing local spots for gentle strolls.
The apartment is positioned in the intersection of the sought-after West Bridgford – with its many cute homeware stores and abundant selection of cafes, bars and restaurants – the railway station and the city centre – all within a 20-minute walk.
Favoured cafés include West Bridgford’s Okende and Number 8, and 200 Degrees by the station. Delilah is a superb downtown deli and Hopkinson’s is a must for vintage wares. Delicious eateries include Everyday People, for ramen, Sexy Mamma and Pizzamissu for fabulous Italian fare, Kushi-ya, a great spot for Japanese tapas and sake and Cleaver and Wake, when fine dining is called for.
Nottingham’s city centre is awash with friendly pubs and bars. 31K delivers an exciting array of cocktails, Pepper Rocks has a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere and great live music and The Pelican Club hosts an array of terrific jazz performers. The deliciously innovative and Michelin starred Alchemilla is a terrific fine dining option. The independent Broadway Cinema and Bar, with its lovely bar and open-air terrace, is another great place to spend an evening.
The area has ready access to many local green spaces and outdoor activities. Wollaton Park, home to a herd of deer, is around six miles east and makes for a gorgeous place to walk and cycle. Attenborough Nature Reserve, about seven miles south, is filled with birds and wildlife and affords beautiful wanders around lakes and ponds. Nearby West Lake offers enticing open water swimming on sunnier days and Holme Pierrepont Country Park is the location for The National Water Sports Centre.
Nottingham’s extensive bus and tram routes offer easy access across the city. The railway station, around a mile and a half from the apartment, runs trains to London in around two hours. The M1 lies just west of the city and the A1 around 20 miles east, with East Midlands Airport around 13 miles south.
