Newhaven is a coastal town in East Sussex, South-East England. Located at the mouth of the River Ouse, it is an important port which offers ferries to the continent.

Newhaven has been an important point of settlement for centuries. There is a Bronze Age fort just outside of the town, on Castle Hill, and in the 5th Century the Anglo Saxons developed a village there. It was not until the 1840s – upon the introduction of the railway – that Newhaven became an established port. Major construction was undertaken by the railway companies to dredge the channel and modernise the harbor, which then meant that ferries were able to run from the town through to France. This also played a vital role in shipping men and supplies across the Channel during the First World War. The town also accommodated large numbers of Canadian soldiers during World War II.

Newhaven has always had a strong connection with the military, as shown by the construction of Newhaven Fort in the 19th Century in order to defend the harbour. This still remains as the largest defense structure to have been built in Sussex, and now operates as a museum. Interestingly, Newhaven is also home to one of the oldest lifeboats in Britain. It was commissioned in 1803, twenty years before the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) was formed.

As of the 2011 census, Newhaven has a population of 12,232 people. The town’s population age is above average at 43.7 compared to the rest of the England (39.3). Of the population, 19% are of retirement age, 22% are under the age of 16 and 59% are of working age. The median age is 45, which compares to 39 for England.

The town has a relatively low unemployment rate with just 2% of people receiving Jobseeker's Allowance, and 10.9% on any kind of benefit. For the country as a whole, these figures are 3.3% and 13.5% respectively. This could potentially be as a result of the relatively higher levels of qualifications held by residents of Newhaven, with only 21.5% of people having no qualifications at all (compared to 22.5% of the rest of the country), and 29.4% having achieved Level 4 qualifications or more.

Another indicator of wealth and prosperity is social grade, which is determined by the occupation held by the main earner in each household. 25.2% of households belong to grade AB under this measure, higher than the national rate. A further 31.8% are in C1, and just 42% of people are in the lower grades of C2 and DE. In comparison, approximately 46% of the country are in these lower grades.

Newhaven also has a high rate of home ownership; 39.8% of houses are owner occupied with no mortgage, and 32.8% are owned with a mortgage. Just 13.2% are privately rented, and 11% designated as social housing.

Newhaven has two secondary schools serving the local children. UTC@Harbourside is a University Technical College that opened in 2014 for students aged 14-18 which specialises in marine and environmental engineering. Seahaven Academy enrolls students between the ages of 11-16, and has 850 pupils

These two secondary schools are fed by four primary schools: Harbour Primary School, Newhaven Academy, Meeching Valley and Denton Community Primary.

Getting around

Newhaven is well placed for motorists. It is at the end of the A26 trunk road, which begins in Maidstone in Kent, and has quick links with nearby motorways and major roads.

When travelling by train, Newhaven is on the Seaford Branch Line. There are two stations through which to travel, Newhaven Town and Newhaven Harbour, whilst Newhaven Marine railway station is effectively out of use.

Local shops

In Newhaven town centre, a good selection of locally-owned and independent stores can be found. There is also a wide selection of bookshops and music shops, as well as some fantastic charity shops available. There are plenty of boutique-style clothing stores with many exciting and quirky clothes collections to choose from, as well as a few nationally known brands. If a more extensive range of clothing brands and styles is desired, then Brighton and Eastbourne are both easily accessible and offer much more in terms of recognizable brands and fashion outlets.
