The Local Guide to Living in Glasgow
Glasgow straddles the banks of the River Clyde, dominating the surrounding area with its beautiful architecture, culture, and urban design. It is the nation’s largest city and one of 32 Council Areas of Scotland, growing too large for its historic county of Lanarkshire. From humble beginnings as a fishing village, the city has grown exponentially through history, becoming Britain’s largest seaport, and often being regarded as the United Kingdom’s ‘second city’ due to its size and economic influence.
Today, Glasgow is a culture hub of knowledge and diversity; host to one of the country’s top universities, a plethora of museums and exhibitions, and the home of sport’s greatest rivalry, the Old Firm Derby. Every season, fans of Glasgow Rangers and Celtic gather to support their teams and rejoice in their ancestral heritage, including the famous Orange Walk performed by members of the Orange Order.
