Bolton is a popular residential area in Greater Manchester, located just 10 miles from the city of Manchester. Unlike its neighbouring city, Bolton is known for its pretty countryside and is ideally located close to the West Pennine Moors. It was really in the 19th century that Bolton’s population grew in size - thanks to textile manufacture in the Industrial Revolution. In fact, it was one of the largest centres of spinning in the world.

Now, Bolton is known for its shopping and popular food and drink festival, which is held annually. It’s also ideally located for commuters working in Manchester, offering a peaceful escape from busy city life. Alongside its variety of shops and cafes, the town also has several theatres, a library, art gallery and all your usual amenities like GP surgeries and schools.

Since the 19th century, Bolton has seen a huge increase in its number of residents. The population now sits at 276,786 (according to the 2011 census) and there are 116,371 households. 72.5% of the population were aged between 16-24 at the time of the census and 14.7% had retired.

Of the population, approximately 60% were in employment of some sort when census data was collected. However, 4.9% of the population were unemployed, which is slightly higher than the North West and rest of England average. Of those working, 18.9% were in the Wholesale and Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motor Cycles industry; and 31.1% in the Human Health and Social Work Activities industry. Service-based industries are also popular here in Bolton, with many working in data processing and call centres.

Nearby schools

When you’re moving your family to a new area, finding a town or city with a variety of good schools is important. In Bolton, parents and pupils will be spoilt for choice, with the town boasting a number of fantastic educational establishments. At primary level, you’ll find a few schools rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. These include Moorgate Primary, which was last inspected in January 2016, and Sunning Hill Primary, last inspected in November 2014.

The secondary school choices here are just as impressive. Bolton Muslim Girls School is one of the best-rated schools in the area, alongside St James’s Church of England High School. There are also two specialist schools, which cater for pupils with special educational needs. Thomasson Memorial School and Rumworth School were both praised for their special educational needs curriculum by Ofsted.

Getting around

The public transportation options in Bolton are good. There’s a town shuttle bus service that operates free of charge around Bolton. A network of local buses offer further travel in and around the area while National Express is a great option for coach transport further afield.

Bolton has its own train station too, managed by Northern Rail. There are quick and convenient services to a variety of North West cities and towns, including Manchester, Blackburn and Southport. For international travel, Manchester Airport isn’t far. Located 20 miles away, the major airport is a convenient hub for business travellers and holidaymakers, with destinations in Europe, the USA and more.

Local shops

Bolton is home to all your big brand supermarket stores with a Sainsbury’s, Asda, Lidl, Co-operative Food and Morrisons all located centrally. For all your other shopping needs, head to the Town Centre, where you’ll find a great range of high street names and independent stores. Crompton Place Shopping Centre is home to fashion chain favourites: New Look and Primark, while Bolton Shopping Park offers out-of-town shopping at Next, TK Maxx and Boots.

If you’re looking for something a little different, why not head to Victorian Market Hall? The historic building is home to modern high street stores like Debenhams and JD Sports but offers shopping with a difference.
