Living In Chorley
Chorley is situated in Lancashire, in the north west of England. It is a peaceful market town which forms part of the Central Lancashire New Town that was established in the 1970s, along with Preston, Fulwood, and Leyland. The earliest evidence of human occupancy in the Chorley region dates approximately back to the Bronze Age, and remnants of ancient settlement have been found in the nearby West Pennine Moors. The Moors span out for 90 square miles between Lancashire and Greater Manchester, and possess an unrivalled and mesmeric beauty. Weekly organised hikes are available for locals and visitors alike.
Astley Hall is a Grade I listed building that can be found in Chorley, and has been described to be ‘the most exhilarating house in Lancashire’. It was previously owned by the Charnock family, but has since come under the town’s ownership, and is now known as Astley Hall Museum and Art Gallery. Visitors have the opportunity to view paintings and plasterwork of famous figures such as Queen Elizabeth I and Christopher Columbus. Bank Hall is an iconic Grade II listed building that can also be found in Chorley, and interestingly made an appearance in the 1969 film ‘The Haunted House of Horror’.

There are approximately 107,155 residents within the Chorley area, with 18.1% of the population aged under 15, 57.6% in the 16-64 age bracket, and 24.4% of the residents being over 65. The average age is 41. The majority of residents are of White British ethnicity (94.3% of the town’s population), followed by White Irish and Other (1.9%), Asian or British Asian (1.8%), and then mixed origin (0.9%). Historically, Chorley has been a Christian town, and this is reflected by the 75.3% of its residents that identify with the Christian faith, whilst 16.8% are non-religious, and 1.1% of the population are Muslim.
The town’s marital status demographics reveal that over half the population are married (50.6%), 12.2% are living with a member of the opposite sex, and 0.6% of the population share a property with a partner of the same sex. 20.9% of its residents are single and have never been married.
Professional jobs are most commonly held by residents of Chorley (17.8% of the population), whereas 12.8% of the population work in associate professional and technical jobs. Skilled trades make up a further 11.9%.
Local Schools
In regard to primary education, Chorley has many excellent choices with good Ofted ratings. These include; Withnell Fold Primary School, Euxton St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, and Euxton Primrose Hill School. Balshaw Lane Community Primary School and Brinscall St. John’s Church of England and Methodist Primary School are also highly reputed. Southlands High School and St.Michael’s Church of England High School are two of the best secondary schools in Chorley, although there are many other good options in and around town. Edge Hill University also has a campus in Chorley, at the Woodlands Centre.
Getting Around
Buses operate in and around Chorley daily, with popular destinations such as Preston, Blackburn and Bolton easily accessible. There are also National Express coaches that go to London regularly. Chorley Railway station can be found centrally, and grants passage to places such as Preston and Manchester Airport. Euxton, Buckshaw Village, Adlington and Croston all have railway stations as well. Junctions 6 and 8 of the M61 motorway also lunk to Chorley, as well as the A6 Roman road that goes through to the town centre.
Local Shops
The Market Walk Shopping Centre is home to 34 different stores and cafés. There are a range of different stores located in the shopping centre, with everything from designer clothes and fragrances to gaming and technology. There are Tesco, Asda and Morrisons stores also found in the centre of town. Chorley has often been hailed as ‘Lancashire’s Market Town’, and an outdoor market operates every Tuesday with a covered market next door.
The Black Horse is a highly rated country pub, serving a wide selection of ales and lagers, as well as delicious home cooked food. Sea View Inn is another excellent choice to grab a few drinks and a traditional Lancashire hot pot in a picturesque setting.
