The local area guide to living in Wimbledon, Merton and Colliers Wood: The Local Area Guide

Wimbledon itself is an area most commonly associated with the annual tennis championships and the affluent Wimbledon Village, but at the bottom of the hill you’ll find a more suburban town with a typical high street and a much more diverse population.

Nearby areas such as Morden and Merton Park are mostly residential, with a typical smattering of local pubs and corner shops. In the east, Colliers Wood is a quiet area with a high number of charming terraced houses. The village, however, lives up to its reputation with stunning architecture, pricey boutiques and independent cafes. The nearby Wimbledon Common is just one of the area’s green havens, which makes a great summer spot for residents.

Information about the local residents

As Wimbledon Common and its surrounding areas is one of London’s most expensive regions, it tends to be populated primarily by affluent professionals. The town itself, however, has a diverse mix of residents and is a hub for young professionals – while the southern suburbs of Merton and Morden also attract high numbers of expats, with particularly large South African and Australian communities.

ENearby schools

There are a number of excellent schools available in the area and it has a widespread reputation for high-performing state schools. Some of these include Wimbledon College, Raynes Park High School and Harris Academy. There are also a number of famous independent schools at both primary and secondary level. The all-boys King’s College and the all-girls Wimbledon High School are two popular options.

The area being in London, there’s a huge range of selection when it comes to higher education. In fact, London has the highest concentration of leading universities in Europe, with institutions like Imperial College London, King’s College London, and the London School of Economics attracting the best students from across the world.

Getting around

Many residents in Wimbledon, particularly around the common, choose to drive, as the area is free from the city’s congestion charge. Although, there are regular buses around the town and into nearby areas such as Fulham and Putney.

At the bottom of the hill, Wimbledon Station provides both overground rail links around London and connection to the tube system via the District Line. There are other tube stations available in the form of South Wimbledon and Collier’s Wood, which both sit on the Northern Line, and a handful of other overground stations, such as Wimbledon Chase and Haydon’s Road.

Local shops

One of the most popular attractions in Wimbledon is the Village, which offers a range of designer boutiques and upmarket chains such as Cath Kidston and LK Bennet. It’s a great place to go for quirky homeware and one-off fashions, and it’s also filled with a number of brilliant pubs, each with their own carefully designed décor. In the town centre, the most frequented area is Wimbledon high street, which is home to many of the nation’s favourite retailers, as well as the Centre Court Shopping Centre, which has 65 stores. There are also plenty of entertainment options, including an Odeon IMAX cinema, the New Wimbledon Theatre and a range of restaurants to choose from.

Sports is another popular pastime in the area. Beyond the tennis, the area is full of parks, stadiums and sports grounds, meaning you’ve never got to go far to exercise, or wile away a Sunday watching local football.
