The local area guide to living in Paddington, Bayswater, Hyde Park

Three of London's most vibrant areas, Paddington, Bayswater and Hyde Park are all popular with tourists as well as those native to London.

Bayswater attracts visitors thanks to its high volume of hotels, and its central location makes it a great base when exploring the city. It sits just north of Hyde Park - London's famous green haven.

Speakers' Corner, where performance artists can often be seen in the act, is recognised around the world. The park also plays host to huge concerts, often headlined by world-famous artists; since 1968 it's seen the likes of Pavarotti and Fleetwood Mac take to the stage.

The other celebrity hangout in the area is Paddington Station - best known as the arrival destination of one of children's literature's most beloved characters, Paddington Bear. It's framed by wrought iron arches that date back to 1854, and which are now an iconic part of the city skyline.

Information about the local residents

The City of Westminster has a diverse population; more than 25% of its residents are migrants. Housing includes state-of-the-art penthouses - such as the million-pound The Lancasters development, which looks out onto Hyde Park - and stunning Georgian stucco townhouses, a number of which have been converted into flats and rented out. Approximately 40% of the population lives in privately rented accommodation, while 30% own their home. The majority of households in the area are one person, but there are still a number of family homes in the area.

The area has an unemployment rate that is below the London average, with most people in the area working in Financial & insurance activities. The crime rates in the area are quite high, with 23.2 crimes per 100 people compared to the London average of 8.8 crimes per 100 people. This is not too indicative of the danger posed to local residents however, with tourism greatly skewing the statistics.

Nearby schools

There are both state and independent primary schools available in the local area. Some of the most notable private schools include Wetherby Preparatory School and Pembridge Hall.

There are also options for secondary school pupils, such as the co-ed independent school, Lansdowne College - which has approximately 275 pupils - and the state academy, Westminster Academy - which has around 932 students. Both schools are the largest of their kind in the area. The area broadly ranks well for education, with 69% of students achieving at least 5 GCSE’s grades A* to C, and came in the top ten for London Borough’s achieving at least 5 GCSE’s above a C.

Getting around

The whole area has excellent transport links, starting with Paddington Station. The gateway from London to West England, it serves as a hub for both buses and trains.

There are a number of bus routes that offer 24-hour services in the area, as well as the London Underground tube system. Queensway and Lancaster Gate stations are on the Central Line, while Bayswater station is one the Circle and District Lines.

Local shops

Hyde Park itself is a huge attraction, with 350 acres of green space to explore. A favourite for families, it hosts open-air events all year round, and various sports competitions and classes take place in its grounds. Monuments such as the Joy of Life fountain and Serpentine Bridge make for a particularly scenic walk - and a great photo opportunity!

Bayswater is home to Whiteleys Shopping Centre, which brings together high-street shops and independent boutiques to cater to shopaholics of all tastes. There are also plenty of eateries in the area, with everything from late-night cafes in Queensway to up-scale restaurants in Queen's Gardens.
