Norwich is Norfolk’s historic capital city, boasting a history of more than 800 years. As one of the major cities of medieval England, the popular tourist spot has retained much of its history while providing all the necessary amenities for modern day living. You’ll find period buildings and historic architecture situated among more contemporary developments, including a variety of shopping malls that have opened over the last 20 or so years.
Norfolk is also well known for its two universities and is very much a university city, attracting many students from overseas. Students and residents here benefit from top shopping, superb eateries, a local open-air market, and all your usual amenities.

Norwich’s population was last recorded in the 2011 census. At this time, there were 132,512 people residing in the city in over 60,000 households. While the age structure at this time was varied, a large proportion of the population were of working age, with the biggest age bracket being 30 – 44 years of age.
The employment levels at the time of the 2011 census sat at 58%, with 5% of the population listed as unemployed. While Norwich's heritage lies in the manufacturing industry, modern day sees a variety of occupations dominating the work landscape. Throughout the 80s and 90s, the city transitioned to a more service-based economy, with the biggest industries being Wholesale and Retail Trade, and Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motor Cycles. As a result of this, many of the residents here listed their occupation under the Skilled Trade, and Associate Professional and Technical categories in the 2011 census data.
If you’re looking for good schools, you’re sure to find a number of fantastic options across the city of Norwich. There’s plenty of choice too – with 38 primary schools and 13 secondary schools, many of which are rated as “good” or “outstanding” by Ofsted.
Outstanding infant schools include Mousehold Infant and Nursery School, Recreation Road Infant School, and Colman Infant School. Outstanding secondary schools include Norwich School, an independent day school for pupils aged 11-18, and Notre Dame High School, a Roman Catholic school that specialises in languages and science. If you’re looking for a good comprehensive, Thorpe St. Andrews School was rated “outstanding” by Ofsted too.
Another perk here in Norwich is the choice of fantastic special needs schools. There are five in total, the majority of which have been assessed as “outstanding” by Ofsted. These include The Parkside School and Harford Manor School.
Norwich is conveniently located with easy access to a number of popular cities thanks to major trunk roads. The A11 offers easy access to Cambridge while the A47 provides good links to Great Yarmouth, East Dereham and Swaffham, and Peterborough. Driving around the city itself is easy too – or you can just as easily travel by foot or bicycle. As a cycle-friendly and green city, you’ll find many residents here taking the latter two options.
Public transportation offers another alternative way to get in and around the city. There are a variety of bus routes and National Express services to and from London. Alternatively, you can hop on a train. The city’s main train station, Thorpe Station, is located a short walk away from the city centre and offers routes to London, Ipswich, and Cambridge to name but a few.
When it comes to shopping, residents here are spoilt for choice. You’ll find all your major supermarkets, like Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, and Asda, as well as smaller branches, like Iceland, dotted throughout the city centre. Of course, it’s not just your grocery needs that will be satisfied here, all your fashion, health, and beauty needs will be met too across Norwich’s range of malls.
If you’re looking for local produce or goods, why not head to the Norwich Market? As one of the largest markets in Europe, it boasts a whole range of goods and operates six days a week. You could also head to the Upper Goats Lane and St Benedict’s area too, where you’ll find independent stores offering something a little different to the norm.
