Things to do
Valencia is Spain’s third-largest city, easily rivalling Madrid and Barcelona when it comes to art, culture, dining, and nightlife. The capital of the Old Kingdom of Valencia, today’s city is positioned on the Mediterranean Sea on the east coast of Spain, about four hours down the coast from Barcelona. Sunny beaches, paella, and a citywide regeneration all help make it an attractive destination.
Part of this regeneration included redirecting the flood-prone River Turia and transforming the space into a public park. A complex of futuristic buildings called The City of Arts and Sciences, designed by Santiago Calatrava, can be found at the end of the former river bed.
In addition to this bold, contemporary architecture, Valencia also includes a rambling old quarter, with Gothic and Renaissance monuments to explore and a wealth of sophisticated Art Nouveau buildings.
Whether you prefer sunbathing on the beach or exploring art museums, there’s no shortage of activities in vibrant Valencia. The City of Arts and Sciences is hard to miss, with its futuristic white walls and curves. It includes an IMAX cinema, planetarium, opera house, science museum, and a marine park that just so happens to be the largest oceanographic aquarium in Europe.
Visit the Old Cathedral, which has been transformed from a Roman temple to a mosque to the Romanesque and Gothic wonder that it is today, to get a sense of Valencia’s history. Art history fans can view important works from El Greco and other artists in the Museum of Fine Arts while animal lovers can see wildlife in natural habitats at the Bioparc.
Positioned on the Mediterranean, there are several city beaches in Valencia. The most popular are Playa de Levante and Playa de Malvarrosa, just north of the port and accessible by metro or tram.
Places to eat
Eating paella is a must-do activity in Valencia, where it was invented. Every restaurant has their own secret recipe, so you’re unlikely to have the same rice dish twice.
La Pepica is one of the best spots to sample it. This beachside restaurant was a favourite haunt of Ernest Hemingway. Visit Michelin-starred Camarena for creative Mediterranean cuisine from head chef Ricard Camarena, or the Canalla Bistro for a slightly more casual experience.
Sample the Valencian take on tapas at Bodega Casa Montana near the beach, offering locally sourced ingredients and a monumental wine list. Vegetarians can find innovative dishes at La Lluna, and Restaurante Alacena offers a laid-back terrace dining experience near the Monastery of El Puig.
One of the highlights of any visit to Valencia is the Central Market, featuring over 1,000 stalls selling fresh produce in a magnificent Art Nouveau building. Local specialities in Valencia include embroidery, ceramics, and shoes, and you’ll find a number of these items on pedestrianised streets like Calle Don Juan de Austria.
Visit El Corte Inglés for fashionable basics or venture to the Plaza Redonda in the Old Town for the Sunday flea market for something a bit quirkier. Modern shopping centres in town include El Saler Centro Comercial, which features a Carrefour supermarket and a number of international retail brands. Aqua Multiespacio is a slightly more upscale shopping centre located in Calle Menorca with designer boutiques.
Getting there & around
Visitors from abroad arrive at Valencia Airport, which is located just 9km from the city centre. There’s a regular bus service running to and from the airport. The Valencia Metro also provides service to the airport and main train station, the Estació del Nord. This station links Valencia with the rest of Spain on the national RENFE network, and regular trains come and go from Madrid and Barcelona.
The city centre is quite pedestrian-friendly and there is also a Metrovalencia network which connects the city with surrounding suburbs. One of these lines is a tram which provides transport to city beaches.
