Newark is an historical market town situated roughly half way between Nottingham and Lincoln. It has a delightful market square, surrounded by many buildings dating from the Georgian and early Victorian periods, including the grade 1-listed Town Hall, completed in 1776. Several buildings also still exist from the Medieval period, including the parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene, with its towered 236-feet-high octagonal spire, and the ruins of the twelfth-century castle with its dungeons beneath. The town was of huge strategic importance during the Civil War, and this is reflected in the fact that the National Civil War centre opened in 2015. The town, which has excellent transport links, is now a popular commuter town for both Nottingham and London. Northgate station provides regular trains to London on the East Coast Main Line (between 1 hour and 15 and 1 hour and 25 minutes, depending upon number of stops), as well as direct trains to Peterborough, Leeds, Newcastle, York and Edinburgh. The town's other station, Newark Castle, provides regular trains to Lincoln, Nottingham and Leicester. The main town has excellent shopping facilities, with a good mix of chain stores and independent shops, a large variety of restaurants and cafes and an excellent market (fruit and vegetables, other fresh food, clothes etc) on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There is a Morrisons supermarket within the town itself, and a Waitrose and Asda just outside, but within easy walking distance. The town is also famous for its many antique shops, and the bi-monthly Newark International Antiques and Collectors Fair is the largest event of its kind in Europe.
