Appealing Restoration: Thought to have been originally constructed in the 1600s and extended in the 1800s, Turnstone House, formerly called Woodville, was in the same family ownership for many generations before being acquired by a renowned Bletchley Park code-breaker in the 1960s from whose family our clients subsequently purchased the property. In recent years, Turnstone House has been the subject of a comprehensive programme of extension and renovation and now represents an excellent example of a charming Cotswold residence exuding character, appeal and history that offers a perfect combination of privacy and seclusion whilst still being within easy reach of all the facilities of the nearby towns. The renovation works were sympathetic to the integrity of the original house retaining and restoring many period features including exposed beams and stone walls, stone mullion windows, crenulated elevations and flagstone floors whilst incorporating modern conveniences including an air-source heat pump, rainwater harvesting and bespoke kitchens and bathrooms.

On entering, the double height entrance hall is overlooked by a mezzanine landing at first floor level that creates an impressive feeling of space and light. The sitting room has a bay window affording views down the garden with French doors opening to the front and a wood burning stove housed in an elegant stone surround providing an entrancing focal point whilst the snug also has a wood-burning stove. The kitchen is fitted with a range of painted units topped by marble and oak surfaces and opens into a contemporary part-glazed dining room with an office/playroom beyond. On the first floor, there are two bedroom suites, one with a dressing area and en suite shower whilst the other has a separate dressing room and en suite bathroom. There are two further bedrooms and a family bathroom on the second floor.

Within the grounds of Turnstone House is a detached building that offers versatility of use. The ground floor has a spacious entrance hall, a bathroom and integral garage with a two evenly proportioned rooms on the first flooring offering options for use as an office complex or self-contained annexe.

Greenhouse Cottage: Accessed via a separate driveway is a detached period cottage ideal for use as guest accommodation or to generate additional income via holiday lettings or longer term rental. In brief, the accommodation is comprised of a sitting room and dining room, fitted kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor with three bedrooms on the first floor and an attic room that could offer further accommodation (subject to granting of relevant permissions). The cottage has level gardens that are mainly laid to lawn with private parking and a detached single garage.

The gardens at Turnstone house are a particular attraction. Landscaped by acclaimed garden designers, Graduate Gardeners, the gardens won a medal in the bali National Landscape Awards in 2016. Comprised of a parterre garden with box hedges enclosing mature shrub beds and ornamental trees while drystone walls, manicured yew trees and high panel hornbeams surround the gardens. A paved terrace and level lawn are sited alongside the sitting room whilst, across the driveway, a larger lawn runs away from the house. A 2.75 acre paddock is situated alongside the house and is ideal for horses or other livestock whilst across the lane there is a further 1.5 acres comprised of a large level lawn (ideally sized for a marquee or croquet lawn) with mature and productive orchards below. The parking area is accessed by automated wrought-iron gates flanked by attractive dry stone walls and offers ample room to park and manoeuvre several vehicles.

Painswick, the “Queen of the Cotswolds”, is a thriving community nestling in a delightful Cotswolds setting. Largely constructed from locally quarried stone, the town has many beautiful buildings dating back as far as the 14th Century. Painswick Churchyard is famous for its impressive array of table tombs and its 99 yew trees about which folklore holds that if a 100th should grow the devil will pull it out. There are several local shops, galleries, tearooms and restaurants in the village along with a pharmacy, doctor and dentist surgeries and two public houses whilst the surrounding towns provide a comprehensive range of social, recreational and retail amenities to suit all tastes and budgets.

The Village offers a playgroup and primary school with secondary schools in the surrounding towns including Marling School (boys), Stroud High School (girls) and Pate’s (mixed) grammar schools with independent schools including Beaudesert Park School and Wycliffe College in Stroud, Dean Close, Cheltenham College and Cheltenham Ladies College in Cheltenham and Kings School in Gloucester.

Recreational opportunities include tennis, rugby, bowls and cricket clubs with many other groups meeting at the Painswick Centre. In the wider area, events include polo at Edgeworth and Cirencester Park, racing at Prestbury Park, eventing at Gatcombe and sailing at the Cotswold Water Park, together with shooting and fishing on local estates. Cheltenham plays host to a series of festivals throughout the year embracing topics ranging from racing to literature and music to science.
