High Stenries Wood extends to about 15.36 acres in total. It is populated with 75% fairly mature Silver Birch and a stand of Spruce at the east end, creating a diverse habitat for local wildlife.

There is a burn along the south edge and technically speaking this is the south boundary but a new deer fence has been erected well to the south of the burn by the neighbours to the south.

Access to the woodland has been removed from the north east through High Stenries Farm or in from the south east through Snab's Farm. A new forestry access has been built over some of this right of access route.

The provision for access in the 1993 Disposition for access is "with free ish and entry by all existing roads and all servitudes of right of way...". There is no provision restricting the nature of type of use.

Dumfries (23 miles) has a range of amenities including primary and secondary schools and a University Campus, with a wide range of shops, supermarkets and shops. Carlisle (19 miles) provides excellent retail and other amenities and a main train station with West Coast Mainline services to London.

Exit the M74 at junction 21 (next north after Gretna), from the south exit at junction 21 just south of Kirkpatrick Fleming or from the north exit at junction 21 at Kirkpatrick Fleming. Head north east on the B6357 on the north side of the M74 toward Chapelknowe. After 2.6 miles turn left just short of Chapelknowe and left at the junction after. Continue past Branteth to Kennedys Corner. Turn right and almost immediately right again where the road forks. The High Stenries turnoff is second on the right after about half a mile. Park your car at the road end and walk 290 metres to the farmhouse and steading. Walk 344 metres due south between the fences (this is where an old right of access type 1 track is going to be reconstructed) to the track and another 173 metres along a track to the ford (south west corner of Lot A).
